Oregon/SW Washington Cases
UFO information about specific events breaks down into stories and cases. What's the difference?
- A story is an uninvestigated narrative about a specific UFO event.
- A case is an investigated narrative about a specific UFO event. The investigation has been done by a credentialed UFO investigator. Usually, after the investigation, a formal report is produced.

Oregon MUFON Field Investigators are trained and tested before they are allowed to conduct an investigation of a UFO story. The training mostly consists of accompanying a certified Field Investigator on a number of investigations to see what the normal procedures for investigation are. The testing is administered by MUFON. Every Field Investigator must pass a 100 question test (MUFON Field Investigator's Exam) with a grade of 80 or more before he or she receives a card identifying them as a Field Investigator. To help a Field Investigator Trainee pass the test, MUFON publishes a Field Investigator's manual.
Some Oregon Cases
Investigating takes time, expertise, energy, and some money, so we have a lot more stories than cases, but here are a few cases we've investigated recently along with some historical cases.
- The Salem Low-Flying Triangle UFO. Jackie Montgomery (pseudonym) was driving south from downtown Salem, Oregon, when she saw a bluish-white, bright, circulating triangle of lights flying low. It was emanating a low-pitched droning/humming sound. She called her husband at their home 1.5 miles south and he saw it too. She arrived home and they both saw it for another ten minutes. Nearby McNary Airfield had no knowledge of the "aircraft" probably violating general aviation rules about not flying below 1000 feet over a populated area.
- The Dalles Circulating Lights UFO. Deirdre McMaster (pseudonym) spotted a UFO with circulating/flashing red and blue/white/yellowish tan lights traveling slowly at low altitude over her house on January 15, 2008. She took five photos of the odd-looking object.
- The Southwest Portland Speeding UFO. On the morning of March 23, 2007, Jackie Potter and her husband Richard (pseudonyms) saw a glowing, orangish, low-flying ovoid object speeding past their bedroom windows. They expected to hear the crash of an airplane(?) or a meteorite(?), but instead were surprised when the object apparently reversed its course and flew 10 seconds later past their windows again and disappeared.
- The West Linn Golden Spheres Display. Laura Fleming (pseudonym) stepped outside her office on March 8, 2001, at 5:30 PM to view some dark clouds and take a break, but was astonished to see a spectacular display of perhaps 100 golden, glowing spheres moving up and down in spiraling columns.
- The Modoc Road UFO in the Clouds. This oblong, varying brightness UFO floated along in some nimbo-cumulus clouds long enough for Karen Brown (pseudonym) to videotape 9.63 seconds of it. She was riding in her car with her husband while driving south toward Medford, Oregon, on March 20, 2007.
- The famous and important Trent family UFO photo case. (Long download PDF file.) You'll find a summary of the case in a Keynote presentation to the May 9, 2006, Oregon MUFON meeting.
- The Appaloosa Way UFO. This red, white, and blue clustered orbs type UFO was videotaped by Keith Rowell, Assistant State Director of Oregon MUFON, on September 24, 2006, in front of his house. Talk about coming right to your doorstep! Check it out and the Oregon MUFON Case Study report, too.
- The Lake Grove Spherical UFOs. This multi-UFO sighting event happened from 2:00 to 4:30 PM in Lake Grove, Oregon, on March 24, 1996. Keith Rowell, Assistant State Director of Oregon MUFON, had six individual sightings of strange, glowing, mostly spherical UFOs through nine power binoculars. Take a look and download the Oregon MUFON Case Study report, too.
- The Gresham Triangle UFO. TBD.
- The Eastbank Esplanade Cigar UFO. TBD.
